Nancy Murrian’s Jana in “Eros & Grace”
Murrian’s latest contribution to the pages of Met Art is not so well described by an particular event or an unfolding series of happenings, but instead by the words it brings to mind. “Eros & Grace” is an evocative portrayal of a gorgeous young model, and the meditative way in which the lens embraces her makes it seem as though even the camera itself was captivated by her beauty.

She seems ethereal, weightless, transient, soft, and dreamlike. She seems made of the stuff of one’s fantasies, the girls that linger before you during that state of near-wakefulness, when consciousness has not yet strengthened its grasp on your mind and your subconscious has not yet taken hold completely. These girls, lacking both the vividness of the dream world and the obvious solidity of real life, often seem to take on their own independence, floating free, seductive in their promise of another world, another place.
It’s always a feat for a photographer to capture such a subjective, personal experience, but Murrian has done an amazing job. Her subject hovers, a pale sprite, in the frame of what could be your doorway. Her blondeness only heightens the sense of elusive frailty: she could just as easily be a trick of the light, and could just as easily disappear were you to rub your eyes too hard, or blink too rapidly in disbelief. Murrian has managed to keep this creature, though, and has treated her - and you - to an amazing selection of photographs.
The sylph’s body, again, is waiflike and long. Her blonde hair tumbles over a disconcertingly innocent face: she seems unaware of her nudity, and watches the camera with a steady, curious gaze. The wisp of cloth that so delicately clads her small hips at the beginning of the series only adds to this sense of airy divinity.
Where did she come from? Could such a creature be real? The air of mystery that permeates these photos is strong as well: what would such an otherworldly dream feel like to touch? Does the breeze moving her soft light hair carry any scent to your bewildered face? And when she approaches, can you feel any warmth emanating from her pale ivory skin?
The photographs, of course, leave many questions intentionally unresolved. What they do provide, though, is a compelling collection of incredibly detailed views of this lovely fairy. Erotic, graceful, and an endless mystery . . . we’ll leave it up to you to muse on the meanings.
